Produttori del Barbaresco is a co-operative from the famous Barbaresco wine appelation in Piedmont, North-West Italy. Classed as Barbaresco Riserva DOCG (there’s also the entry level Langhe Nebbiolo DOC and a base Barbaresco DOCG), there are nine separate cru bottlings from the Barbaresco zone, produced from the finest vintages. Each wine is a distinguishing expression of its site/terroir, even if the sites are right next to each other.
From the first whiff of roses, red cherries and spice, to the intense, taste of vibrant fruits with high acidity, seamless oak and great ageing potential. These are great food wines that are dry in character, but also can be deeply appreciated alone. This tasting held by Enoteca Sileno and 121BC (also linked to Vini restaurant) gave us the opportunity to compare all nine crus from their new release 2007 vintage. Following are my tasting notes and characteristics for each of the Cru regions from Produttori del Barbaresco:
RISERVA ASILI 2007: Nose of sweet red fruits with spice and a hint of mushroom… Palate savoury and dry upfront, with rich red fruits, high acid, darker spices (black pepper) and very firm but silky tannins. 100% Nebbiolo.
RISERVA MONTEFICO 2007: Nose bit reserved, red and black fruits, floral/roses. Intense juicy, savoury palate, with dark spices, very firm tannins (look forward to seeing these tannins soften with age) through to a sweeter finish with warm spice. 100% Nebbiolo.
RISERVA MONTESTEFANO 2007: I loved every wine but if I had to choose this would be my favourite pick to drink now! 🙂 Nose with dried red fruits, nice floral/rose characters, with leather and spice. Palate savoury with red fruits and dark cherries, hint of mint, well structured firm but polished tannins (softer than some of the other crus), and darker spices such as liquorice. Finish is elegant and warm. 100% Nebbiolo.
RISERVA MUNCAGOTA 2007: Floral nose with plums and warm spice (vanilla, cinnamon), with hints of tobacco and leather. Palate savoury, lean, tannins chalky but smooth and well integrated. Vineyard used to be called Moccagatta. 100% Nebbiolo.
RISERVA OVELLO 2007: Nose full of red fruits with a bit of earthy/dusty character, soft spice and sweetness. Palate with rich red fruit flavour, vibrant acidity, soft tannins that feel plush and a little chalky. Overall quite elegant. Wine is said to combine the best of the Montestefano and Montefico vineyards. 100% Nebbiolo.
RISERVA PAJE 2007: Nose soft and perfumed with a hint of musk, rose/floral characters, red cherry and warm hints of vanilla and spice, all also on the palate which is overall bright and firm yet reasonably approachable. Good finish. 100% Nebbiolo.
RISERVA PORA 2007: Nose bit reserved, with definite floral and black/red cherry characters and a warm touch of vanilla. Palate displays dark fruits with bold tannin structure that will show it’s true potential with age. 100% Nebbiolo.
RISERVA RABAJA 2007: Nose full of dark red fruits and delicate sweet spice. Palate savoury and upfront with black fruits and bold, grippy tannins – overall good intensity in flavour and structure. Firm, savoury finish. 100% Nebbiolo.
RISERVA RIO SORDO 2007: Rose and dried red fruits on the nose, with underlying spice. Palate good weight of red and black fruits, dark spices and fine tannins with a bit of grip. 100% Nebbiolo.
All cru wines displayed equally stunning Nebbiolo characters from each site, with Rrp around AU$130/bottle. Definitely worth trying if you’re not already familiar with this co-operative! Who also have a great history that can be read on their site… Cheers
