In Orange, the Borrodell winery has high quality cool climate wines along with a lovely cellar door, restaurant and fresh food overlooking the country. Situated in a high altitude area at 1,000 metres above sea level, in volcanic basalt soil (which holds moisture well), Borrodell winery is in an ideal situation to produce wines with well structured, often elegant styled, wines.
One of their great wines is their Gewürztraminer – in James Halliday’s 2010 Wine Companion, he awards the vineyard with 4.5 stars and rates the Borrodell Gewürztraminer ’08 as Australia’s top wines in the “Other White Wines” category, giving it 96 points. It is hard to find a good Gewürztraminer that’s not going to cost a decent amount.
I appreciated all the wines I tried, but in particular I enjoyed their Pinot Noirs (2004, 2005 and 2006) and Gewurztraminer. Their Cherry Liqueur is also interesting.
They also have Sister’s Rock Restaurant at the top of the vineyard. If around Orange NSW, the Borrodell winery is defintely worth a visit! Website: http://www.borrodell.com.au/
